# Change a transaction category

To change a transaction category, follow these steps:

### Change transaction categories

1. Select the transaction you'd like to change the category of
2. Click on the **Category** button underneath the transaction name 
3. Select the category you want the transaction categorised as 
4. Click **Select All** if you want to apply this category to all transactions from the same merchant 
5. Click on **Apply edit** at the bottom of the screen

### Mass update transaction categories

You can also update the categories of multiple transactions by using our [Advanced Transactions Editing](https://help.emma-app.com/en-us/article/advanced-transactions-editing-qej2tx/) feature

### Learning previous edits

Emma is able to learn from your past edits. If you make three or more changes to a similar transaction, the app will be able to remember your previous edits and adapt future transactions.
