# Handling savings

Well, hey there, you saver!

Not sure how to handle savings in Emma? Look no further. How you treat your savings will depend on whether you have the savings account connected to Emma.

###### My savings account **is** connected to Emma

If your savings account is connected to Emma, all transfers to this account will automatically be categorised as 'Excluded'. We do this so the transfers are not double-counted in your analytics.

To account for your savings in Emma, decrease your total budget by the amount you want to save. For example, if you have a total budget of £1000 and want to save £200 every budgeting period, decrease your total budget to £800 💰

###### My savings account **isn't** connected to Emma

If your savings account isn't connected in Emma, transfers to this account will show in Emma as an outgoing transaction.

If you don't want this outgoing transaction to be counted as 'spending', [categorise](https://help.emma-app.com/en/article/exclude-a-transaction-oyflul/) it as 'Excluded'.

If you want to have your transfers showing in your budget, categorise the transfer as 'Investments' or, if you have Emma Pro, [create a custom category](https://help.emma-app.com/en/article/create-edit-and-delete-custom-categories-umylhf/) called 'Savings'.
