What are pending transactions?

When you make a purchase, several things happen behind the scenes.

The merchant asks your bank if you have enough money to pay for what you're buying 💰

If the bank confirms, it'll put this money aside. The money put aside is the pending transaction and is temporary

The merchant then tells your bank how much the final amount was

The bank sends the merchant your money

When a transaction is no longer pending, your bank deletes it and replaces it with a posted transaction. While most pending transactions are the same as the posted transaction, they can be different.

For example, you fill up your car at a gas station which pre-authorises your account for £1. In your account you'd see a £1 pending transaction. Once your payment is posted, however, the posted transaction would reflect how much money you actually spent on gas i.e £30

So...why can't I amend them?

Because pending transactions are temporary and the date, name or amount of the transaction can change when it's posted, it's a challenge to accurately track which transactions you've made changes to and apply these changes. We want to get it right so you won't be able to amend pending transactions just yet.

Don't despair! We know it's a big challenge but Emma is always getting better so keep an eye out as things might change in the future 😉

Note: only some banks will show pending transactions in Emma. If you can't see any pending transactions, your bank doesn't provide us with this information 😥
