Why does Paypal generate 3 transactions in the Emma app?

If you have linked Paypal to Emma, you might have noticed three transactions for the same purchase.

This can happen only if you shop online with Paypal and pay via one of your bank accounts.

In this scenario, you'll see:

a negative transaction on PayPal - this is the purchase you have made
a positive transaction on PayPal - this is the money that was taken from your bank account and moved to PayPal to fund the purchase
a negative transaction on your bank account - this is the money taken from your bank account

Emma's technology should be able to identify the last two transactions and set them as excluded.

If this is not the case, you are free to change the category and mark them both as excluded, so that only the negative transaction on PayPal will count towards your analytics.

Why does this happen?

This is an internal behaviour of paypal when using it as a payment method on top of an existing bank account. There is nothing unusual about it and describes the movement of funds to be able to make the purchase.
