Can I edit past budgets?

Currently, in Emma, you can't edit past budgets — and this applies to all budget types, whether that's category, merchant, or rolling budgets.

Rolling budgets carry forward your underspend or overspend from the previous period, and that carry-forward amount is calculated as a snapshot at the start of each new period based on how your transactions were categorised at that moment.

This means if you go back and recategorise a transaction from a previous period after a new period has already started, the rolling budget won't update to reflect that change — and things can start to look a little off!

If this has happened to you, the fix is straightforward: stop the rolling budget and reset it afresh. This gives you a clean start, so the mistake is not carried over.

To stop the rolling budgets:

Go to Budgeting on Feed
Tap on pencil icon to edit
Choose Edit Budgeting
Turn off Rolling Budgets by sliding it off

Note: The golden rule with rolling budgets is to make sure transactions are categorised correctly before a new period kicks off — that way, the rollover calculation will always pick everything up as expected.
