Why do I need to connect a bank account to Emma?

Emma helps you with your finances by connecting directly to your bank account.

It is not possible to use Emma without connecting to at least one account.

Without connecting to your bank account, you'd need to do things manually which is something we wanted to avoid when we built Emma!

By connecting your accounts, we can automatically import new transactions and account balances keeping your budget up-to-date.

Connecting your bank account in Emma does not give us the ability to charge that account.

Is it safe to connect my bank account to Emma?

Yes, Emma uses the Open Banking system that was mandated by the Government to give third parties (that's us 👋) safe and secure access to all banks in the UK. You can only access this Open Banking system if you're regulated by the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) which we are and you can see our registration page on the FCA website.

You will also see on your bank's website how they work with Open Banking. Just search “Your Bank Name” + Open Banking, for example, “Barclays Open Banking”. Your bank should have a page to explain how they use Open Banking so you can check personally that it is safe and secure.

Connecting your bank account in Emma does not give us the ability to charge that account. Emma just has read-only access to display your transaction data and funds can not be transferred.

There will be a 90-day consent period so your account will be automatically disconnected after this time or you can choose to disconnect your account manually at any time!
